What are some things we can do to build a deeper connection to our fellow man so that selfless service might come more naturally to one?

Recognize the pain and suffering of all life. But not just merely recognize it, but own up to the irresponsibilities, ignorance and faults of Humanity as if they were ones own.  I believe this will bring one closer to the hearts of all living beings, rather all of life itself.

I believe it is with this pain comes the direct perception of the sanctity of life present within every atom, within every beating heart. This might be the only way to truly cultivate Compassion, as I believe it can never be genuine unless it is born from pain and sorrow.  Something about what Mahatma Gandhi states about reducing himself to zero come to mind.

Its worth some deep thought.  It just seems like there is really nothing to give- truly give- unless one has become identified Humanity itself,  or at least acts on its behalf.

This can be done by everyone, though its been said that not everyone will partake.  It is entirely practical to the Occultist just as much as it is with honest and caring person.  One doesn't need to volunteer nor pay charities, however, one must give the true give of sacrifice.

Thank you for these beautiful and sincere thoughts.

One might say that selflessness lies at the heart of the spiritual path. It is one of the major themes of the Gita.  Personal desire stands in the way of a higher life, we are told.  Through careful and thoughtful self-examination and meditation we must discover how it holds us down and transcend it.

Gandhi once said that he was working towards reducing himself to a zero.  What do  you think he meant by that?
