Is this saying that as we become more selfless, the grander our perceptions become?

If we live for and as the Self of all beings we are certain to be in a different state of consciousness than the self-centered desire nature of the lower man. It would certainly change how we view the life around us.

Perhaps this is one way of seeing Montaigne's idea of belonging to oneself.

And the view of what the self is determines everything.  I think the Self in Self Reliance for Emerson was the Over-Soul.  This is commonly known amongst the Transcendentalists.
