I have just heard recently, a week or two ago, one of the Dalai Lama’s public teachings, where he mentions the importance of proper preparation on the Sutra path (development of bodhicitta and realization of emptiness) before one delves into Tantric practices such as Deity Yoga. I forgot the reason but his basic argument was that the better realization of emptiness one has, the more one benefits from the practice.

It is the atman, the Spirit, by whose power the ear hears, the eye sees, the
tongue speaks, the mind understands and life functions. The wise man separates
the atman from these faculties, rises out of sense-life and attains immortality.
